Nanjing City, China/Oshawa, ON - In a historic first for the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), the Nanjing University of Technology (NJUT) in China today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that outlines a commitment to begin discussions to establish joint opportunities between the institutions.

The proposed areas of co-operation, subject to mutual consent, include projects related to research, teaching, faculty development and service with the potential for the exchange of faculty members and students and the creation of a Joint Research and Development Centre.

"We are thrilled to develop this outstanding opportunity to broaden our international academic co-operation network by establishing this connection our university colleagues in China," said Dr. George Bereznai, dean of both the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science at UOIT.

The MOU signing ceremony took place at a banquet in Nanjing City celebrating a quarter-century of Ontario-Jiangsu relations. On hand for the signing were Premier Dalton McGuinty and the Honourable Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism and Culture who are leading an Ontario delegation currently visiting China. Representing UOIT on behalf of President Dr. Ronald Bordessa, the MOU was signed by Dr. Dan Zhang, associate professor, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

"Like UOIT, the Nanjing University of Technology has a strong commitment to research and teaching in the industrial application of energy-saving and low-carbon technology," said Dr. Zhang. "This MOU is an excellent first step toward a development of a formal agreement."

UOIT will continue to work with academic officials at NJUT to establish a Joint Steering Committee to align an academic partnership that would develop a protocol for a dually-offered degree and oversee its implementation.
