Leading North American cybersecurity expert to speak January 20 at UOIT

The Faculty of Business and Information Technology (FBIT) is extending an open invitation to hear a leading North American expert on cybersecurity offer his thoughts on the latest challenges, trends and opportunities facing the industry. Guest speaker Michael Assante will make his presentation at UOIT on Thursday, January 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Science building, Room 1350 (*new location).

Assante has held key posts in industrial control system security research at the Idaho National Laboratory and then as chief security officer of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, which is charged with power grid reliability. He was one of the experts that addressed U.S. senators last year about the dangers of a Windows-specific computer worm known as Stuxnet. The topics Assante will address include a history of cybersecurity, the life-cycle of advanced malware and the current political and regulatory environment surrounding cybersecurity.

Assante is also the president of the U.S. National Board of Information Security Examiners (NBISE). Through FBIT, UOIT is the first and only Canadian university investigating how it can benefit from the NBISE accreditation.
