Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT researchers awarded more than $1.1 million from NSERC

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) recently received $278,257 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help support continued research in the areas of engineering and science.

Fourteen researchers at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) were recently awarded Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Grants and Research and Tools and Instruments Grants, which have a combined total of more than $1.1 million over the next five years. The funding will ensure support for more innovative research in the areas of energy systems, engineering, information technology, nuclear science and science.

"I would like to thank the Ministry of State for Science and NSERC for their continued commitment and investment in fundamental and applied research at UOIT,” said Dr. Michael Owen, associate provost, Research. “This funding allows our researchers and their student trainees to engage in high-quality, game-changing research and mutually beneficial collaborations with industry partners. NSERC funding provides our students with opportunities to gain valuable hands-on experience working with world-class researchers.”

UOIT joins successful applicants from universities across the country who will receive more than $410 million in grants and scholarships over terms ranging from one to five years. The Discovery Grants Program is NSERC’s largest program and a key element of Canada’s support for excellence in science and engineering research and training at Canadian universities. It gives researchers the freedom and flexibility to pursue the most promising research directions as they arise, encouraging creative and cutting-edge approaches and international collaborations.

"Through these programs, NSERC provides direct support to an exceptionally strong base of scientific and creative talent in every field of the natural sciences and engineering," said Dr. Suzanne Fortier, president, NSERC. "Our scholarships and fellowships programs help us recruit and retain the bright young minds that will lead the next generation of Canadian discoverers and innovators. The flexibility and broad base of research supported by our internationally recognized Discovery Grants Program maintains our capacity to promote important breakthroughs."

A complete list of the researchers, their projects and NSERC funding received can be found on the NSERC website.
