Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

New applications strengthen UOIT’s technology-enriched learning environment

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) ability to deliver technology-enriched learning is moving to an even higher level this fall.

Throughout September and October, UOIT has launched an exciting series of new tools that will make it easier than ever for current and prospective students, faculty and staff to stay connected with the university. These tools include: the new Learning Management System (LMS) Blackboard Learn 9.1; a new Google Apps for Education service (UOITnet) for undergraduates, graduate students and alumni; and the new free mobile app UOIT Mobile that launched today for iPhone and Android (UOIT Mobile video link). UOIT Mobile will also soon be available on Blackberry.

UOIT's commitment to advancing the highest quality of learning in a technology-enriched environment has led us to the next generation in Learning Management Systems. Blackboard Learn is any easy-to-use, flexible solution that offers centralized management of course materials, promotes user-driven collaboration and the sharing of curriculum resources. Serving students and faculty alike, the implementation of Blackboard Learn will deliver a superior learning experience.

“UOITnet offers our students some huge advantages such as mobile access, email with 25 GB of storage, shared calendars, online documents and more,” said Dr. Bill Muirhead, Associate Provost, Academic and Information Technology. “With this implementation, UOIT joins other leading universities in Canada, the United States and worldwide that use Google Apps to deliver the advanced technology students need.”

Blackboard Learn and UOITnet are prominently featured in UOIT Mobile, a new application that will help students gain quicker access to courses, find their way around campus, stay up-to-date on the latest UOIT news and events, search the campus directory and much more.

Complementing the implementation of Blackboard Learn, UOITnet and UOIT Mobile is the university’s redesigned website at uoit.ca. The new site features refreshed content, bold imagery, improved and streamlined navigation, a responsive design that adapts to screen size for easier viewing and interactivity, and new features like Explore UOIT that provide easy access to videos and content that highlight campus life.

UOIT Mobile and uoit.ca are the go-to resources for all things UOIT.
