UOIT’s Strategic Mandate Agreement emphasizes commitment to outcomes-based learning
October 24, 2012

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is underscoring its commitment to finding new ways to transform and broaden opportunities for learning both inside and outside the classroom.
In response to the Province of Ontario’s directive to the post-secondary sector to submit a Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA) proposal, UOIT will focus on promoting student success, providing greater access through multiple pathways to degree completion, achieving efficiencies, and cultivating innovation and quality in areas of teaching and research.
UOIT was well-positioned to respond to Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Glen Murray’s call to submit the SMA by September 30, given the extensive strategic planning work conducted this past year. The university has identified three overarching strategic priorities:
- Implement flexible delivery models, outcomes-based learning strategies and enhanced pathways to support 21st-century learning;
- Drive productivity and innovation through strengthened partnerships with Durham College and Trent University; and
- Enhance the physical and IT infrastructure to increase productivity and support a healthy, sustainable 21st-century workplace.
"The SMA builds on our refreshed vision and mission statements and provides focus and direction for UOIT’s activities over the next three years," said UOIT President and Vice-Chancellor, Tim McTiernan. "UOIT aims to extend outcomes-based learning strategies to all of its programs, with an emphasis on problem-, case-, project- and team-based learning strategies, while providing flexible opportunities for self-learning through enhanced online offerings."
At the same time, UOIT will enhance its capacity to develop academic and research partnerships with industry, community and other institutions, at home and abroad, that engage graduate and undergraduate students, create knowledge, solve problems and contribute to Canada’s economic and social development. UOIT will be distinguished as a technology-enriched, inclusive, student-centered and innovative university.
