UOIT women's soccer team celebrates after OUA playoff win over McMaster at Oshawa's Civic Fields (October 23, 2013).

In just the program’s second year of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) competition, the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s soccer team has secured its first-ever victory in an OUA playoff game.

UOIT earned a dramatic penalty kicks victory over the McMaster Marauders (video highlights link) on October 23 in a first-round matchup played at Oshawa’s Civic Fields. The victory advanced the Ridgebacks to the OUA quarter-finals on Sunday, October 27 where they will take on the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The UOIT-McMaster contest went to penalty kicks after the teams played to a scoreless draw after 90 minutes of regulation play and 30 minutes of overtime.

“I was very proud of the girls and all they have accomplished in such a short time together,” said Ridgebacks Head Coach Peyvand Mossavat. “This was a historical win for UOIT and the women's soccer team. Winning a playoff game is always difficult and McMaster played extremely well, which made it even more challenging. Our young team stayed on task and were focused for 120 minutes. That’s special and a sign of a team and program on the rise.”

In 2012, the women’s soccer team’s first OUA season, the Ridgebacks also qualified for the playoffs, but lost in the first round 2-1 to McMaster in Hamilton, Ontario.
