Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

The innovative Forensic Science program at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has received the prestigious accreditation of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences’ Forensic Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC). It’s the second such program in Canada granted this distinction by the Colorado Springs, Colorado-based organization.

"FEPAC accreditation provides evidence of the quality, breadth and substance of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s Forensic Science program,” said Dr. Douglas Holdway, Dean, UOIT Faculty of Science. “This recognition gives our graduates a competitive advantage in the marketplace. With the opening of our new Crime Scene House, and new program specializations in Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Physics and Forensic Psychology, potential students have even more reasons to consider UOIT as the best choice for a Forensic Science education."

“The FEPAC accreditation process is rigorous and we are delighted to be recognized as one of the leading universities for Forensic Science education,” said Dr. Cecilia Hageman, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Science and Director, Forensic Science program. “We are extremely proud of this milestone. It is an acknowledgment of the strong scientific foundation of our programs, the strength of our teaching faculty, and the excellent technology and facilities available to our students.”

In addition to providing deeper credibility for UOIT’s undergraduate program in Forensic Science, the FEPAC accreditation will also help the Faculty of Science continue to build the depth of its master’s and PhD degree opportunities.

Other UOIT Forensic Science program features:

  • Integration of tablet computers, specialized software, learning objects and digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras.
  • Hands-on learning opportunities through staged mock crime scenes at Crime Scene House.
  • Forensic Ecology Facility, used for decomposition and entomological research.
  • Dedicated Forensic Laboratory for biological and chemical analyses.
  • Focused courses such as Criminalistics, and Forensic Drug Chemistry and Toxicology.

The Faculty of Science will also hold its sixth-annual Forensic Science Research Day on Friday, April 25 (Regent Theatre, 50 King Street East in downtown Oshawa) where fourth-year students will present their research findings to leading professionals in the field.
