Pedestrians should avoid walking in designated construction zones in the Conlin Road and Simcoe Street corridor at the university's north Oshawa location.

For safety reasons, the campus community is asked to refrain from walking in designated constructions zones in the Simcoe Street, Conlin Road and Founders Drive corridors.

Construction activity is underway on the university’s new Software and Informatics Research Centre on the northeast corner of Conlin Road and Founders Drive. At the same time, the Region of Durham’s road widening project continues in the area of Simcoe Street and Conlin Road.

Pedestrians are asked to walk only where there are sidewalks (on the sides of the road opposite the construction). Pedestrians should be careful to only cross streets at intersections where there is a traffic control device.

Pedestrians should only walk in the following areas:

  • Simcoe Street: east side between Founders Drive and Conlin Road.
  • Founders Road: west side between Conlin Road and Simcoe Street.

Pedestrians should NOT use:

  • West side of Simcoe Street between Founders Drive and Conlin Road.
  • North side of Conlin Road between Simcoe Street and Founders Drive.
  • East side of Founders Drive between Conlin Road and the Campus Fieldhouse.

Please refer to the campus map, which identifies (in black and gold) the construction zone area for pedestrians to avoid.

Commuters should watch for pedestrians and also be prepared for occasional traffic delays, particularly during peak travel hours. Road construction updates are available at the Region of Durham’s Traffic Watch website.

Pedestrians should follow these safety rules:

  • Always cross at an intersection where there is a traffic control device.
  • Don’t cross in the middle of the block or between construction pylons.
  • Stop and look all ways before entering the roadway.
  • Don’t expect cars to stop, they may have the right-of-way.
  • Watch for traffic turning at intersections.
  • Wear light-coloured or reflective clothing when walking in dusk or darkness.
  • Don’t assume that drivers can see you.
  • Don’t text or use a wireless device while crossing the road.
  • Don’t start your crossing at a traffic control signal once the ‘Don’t Walk’ symbol begins to flash.
  • Never cross on a red light.

Thank you for your patience and assistance.
