Scheduled campus electrical and computing outage at north Oshawa campus - Saturday, July 5

Emergency notification

The Office of Campus Infrastructure and Sustainability (OCIS) reminds the Ontario Tech University community that the annual scheduled one-day outage for electrical infrastructure preventive maintenance and repair at the university’s north Oshawa campus will take place Saturday, July 5 from approximately 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Please do not schedule campus activities during the maintenance period. For everyone's safety, all buildings (except Simcoe Village residence) will be closed as only minimal emergency power is available. In addition, there will be no onsite telecommunication or computer service available. This means no employee, student, research or visitor activities can take place in affected buildings.

Remote or VPN access to Banner, university websites or other services hosted in the data centre will still be available. Downtown campus operations, services and building access will not be affected.

Faculty and staff should plan their work and make alternative arrangements for this outage. If you have a project or research underway that the power outage might impact, and for which no alternative plan is possible, contact Ken Bright, Director, OCIS, at ext. 2532 as soon as possible to determine whether backup power can be arranged.

The power outage will affect cooling systems, meaning much of the university’s information technology (IT) network will be down during this period. Some systems may be able to continue on backup power; however, this depends on how the day goes, and cannot be guaranteed. If your research project requires continuous computing/power, you should consider options that can sustain a 12-hour outage. If this is not possible, contact Franco Scanga, Manager, Technology Assets, IT Services, at ext. 2654 for assistance in planning.

  • If required due to unfavourable weather conditions, the alternative date for this electrical maintenance is Saturday, July 12.

For your advanced planning, the next scheduled electrical maintenance at the north Oshawa location will occur on Saturday, July 4, 2026.

Thank you in advance for your patience and assistance in preparing for this service disruption.
