Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Teacher candidates lead first education conference at Ontario's newest university

OSHAWA, Ont. - Tomorrow's teachers will take centre stage at Ontario's newest university, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), during a two-day Faculty of Education event April 26 and 27 featuring technology in education.
At Ontario's first laptop-based university, state-of-the-art technology enhances the learning environment and provides teacher candidates will the tools required for effective teaching in the 21st-century.

Teaching is Our Universe (TIOU) is a free conference for teachers conducted by the university's first-ever class of teacher candidates. UOIT has 70 students in its first Faculty of Education class, pursuing their Bachelor of Education - B.Ed. (consecutive) degrees.

Educators from all grade levels and interested media are welcome to explore workshops which will present valuable insight on the many innovative educational software and teaching tools used in the disciplines of chemistry, physics, computer science, biology, general science and mathematics.

The seminar culminates April 27 at 7 p.m. with a presentation from keynote speaker, Jay Ingram, renowned science broadcaster and writer. Ingram is currently co-host and producer of the television show @discovery.ca, a daily science and nature news magazine on the Discovery Channel. Before his involvement with Discovery, Ingram was a longtime CBC Radio personality hosting the popular science program Quirks and Quarks, as well as The Talk Show. He was also a regular on CBC television, appearing on The Health Show and CBC Newsworld's Canada Live. His books include The Science of Everyday Life; Talk, Talk; The Burning House; The Barmaid's Brain; as well as a number of children's books.

Conference attendees will also have the opportunity to view teacher candidate portfolios, to visit publishers' displays, and to learn more about the innovative campus by taking a guided tour.
