Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Local company ensures continuous top-notch experiences for students

OSHAWA, Ont. - The fact that just over 46,000 individuals work in the manufacturing sector is evidence of how important this industry is to the economy of Durham Region. A local manufacturer of high quality electrical and lighting products, Hubbell Canada has supported our campus community for many years-most recently with a $280,000 donation to the Campaign for the new U at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).

As well as being a regular contributor to scholarships at Durham College, Hubbell has provided $250,000 towards the capital component of the university and another $30,000 for scholarships at UOIT.

"We have supported Durham College for many years and this was an opportunity to demonstrate the confidence that we have in the province's newest university," said Allan Gibbins, president of Hubbell Canada. "We want to ensure that students have access to top quality resources and innovative learning techniques, while ensuring that individuals with financial needs are given the opportunities they deserve."

The Hubbell Canada Award will be comprised of two separate donations: $10,000 for expendable awards and $15,000 for an endowed fund that will be matched by Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund. The scholarships will be available for students enrolled in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology or the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science who demonstrate financial need.

"With many challenges and opportunities ahead, now more than ever we need the support of community members to ensure the success of Ontario's newest university. Together we can create a post-secondary institution that redefines excellence in education, as well as a cornerstone of economic growth for the next century in Durham Region. With today's announcement from Hubbell Canada and Allan Gibbins we have set a great example of the type of support available in our community," stated Terry Slobodian, vice-president of Advancement at UOIT.
