Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT tops application growth among Ontario students three years running

First choice for students for second straight year

OSHAWA, Ont. - For the third straight year, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) leads the province in university application growth among secondary school students. Overall application growth at UOIT jumped 13.4 percent over last year, compared with a system-wide average of 1.6 percent.

According to the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, UOIT posts a tremendous 22.8 percent increase in students making the university their first choice for enrolment in fall 2006, over last year. That's compared with a 3.7 percent system-wide increase, over 2005.

The overwhelming response to Ontario's newest university proves that UOIT is making a strong impression on the minds of tomorrow's leaders, said Richard Levin, vice-president of Strategic Enrolment Management and registrar. Students applying to UOIT are attracted to our market- and career-oriented programs and technology intensive learning.

In September 2005, UOIT became the province's fastest-growing university for the second year in a row. In only its third year of operation, UOIT has over 3,000 students studying in a range of fields including Business, Engineering, Science, Social Science, Education, Health Science, and Nursing.

We're delighted to see the increasing number of students who recognize that UOIT offers a challenging academic experience in a vibrant and connected campus community, said Dr. Gary Polonsky, UOIT president. We encourage these students to visit our campus to explore all that UOIT has to offer.

The Ontario Universities' Application Centre is still receiving applications, so these figures are preliminary. A more complete report on secondary applications is expected in February.
