Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT welcomes new President Dr. Ronald Bordessa to campus

OSHAWA, Ont. - In keeping with its ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation in education, UOIT celebrated another milestone this morning with the arrival on campus of new President Dr. Ronald Bordessa.

"On behalf of the UOIT Board of Governors and the entire campus community, I would like to officially welcome new President Dr. Ronald Bordessa to the university," said Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann, chair of the board. "With his extensive postsecondary experience and strong leadership background, Dr. Bordessa will continue the remarkable growth and ongoing success of UOIT well into the future. We look forward to working with him as he brings new opportunities for our students to receive the very best education."

Most recently Vice-President, Academic and Provost at Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia, Dr. Bordessa joins UOIT with over 30 years of postsecondary experience including teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Geography department of Atkinson College at York University. In addition, he has held several academic administrative positions including associate dean and dean of Atkinson College, renamed Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies.

A widely published author of national and international books and research papers on the aspects of social life in urban areas, he has also written several essays on literary studies, environmental issues, and the politics of land development.

"I am very excited to officially assume my duties at UOIT and I look forward to building strong relationships with our students, faculty, staff and the community to ensure that we continue to develop innovative programs to meet the demands of today's knowledge-driven economy," said Dr. Bordessa.

Dr. Bordessa takes over the university from Founding President, Dr. Gary Polonsky who retired at the beginning of July.
