Faculties of Education, Science, and Criminology, Justice and Policy Studies celebrate faculty nominations
OSHAWA, Ont. - Clearly demonstrating just how well professors at UOIT challenge and inspire students to push their own boundaries of thinking and learning, the university announced today that three of its faculty members have been nominated for the TVOntario (TVO) Best Lecturer Competition 2007.
Dr. Shirley Van Nuland, an assistant professor with the Faculty of Education, Dr. Rupinder Brar, a lecturer with the Faculty of Science, and Christopher diCarlo, a lecturer with the Faculty of Criminology, Justice and Policy Studies have all been nominated for the competition which saw a total of 258 educators endorsed by students and alumni from their respective academic institutions for their enthusiasm, knowledge, and eloquence.
"Each of the faculties at UOIT is comprised of world-class professors who broaden students' knowledge in their fields and bring outstanding experience to the classroom and the lab," said Dr. Ronald Bordessa, president of UOIT. "We are thrilled to see not one - but three - of our faculty members nominated for the honour of being Ontario's Best Lecturer. Their nominations are a solid testament to the strength of our faculties and we congratulate each of them on their nomination."
Of the 258 lecturers nominated, 155 met the competition criteria and were asked to submit a video clip from one of their lectures. From there, 71 professors in total, including Van Nuland, Brar and diCarlo, accepted the challenge to compete for the title of Ontario's best.
30 semi-finalists will be announced in the fall and a panel of independent judges will then create a shortlist of 10 nominees. Judges Margaret Wente, columnist, The Globe and Mail, Camilla Gibb, novelist, and Tony Keller, managing editor of Maclean's Magazine will be looking for lecturers who engage their listeners with passion and flair while delivering their message with genuine conviction.
Following the initial competition, the top 10 finalists will deliver their winning lectures on TVO's Big Ideas during February and March of 2007 with the winner decided upon by viewers. If a UOIT faculty member wins the competition, they will hold the title of Ontario's Best Lecturer and the university will receive a $10,000 TD Meloche Monnex Scholarship.
