Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

CIBC donates $250,000 to UOIT Business and IT students to help open doors to challenging careers

OSHAWA, Ont. - CIBC announced today that it will contribute $250,000 to students enrolled in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology at UOIT.

This donation will be used to develop the CIBC Endowment which will fund two awards annually designed to help Business and IT students with a demonstrated financial need. The first award, the CIBC Entrance Bursary valued at $3,000 each, will be given to five students at the undergraduate level. The second, the CIBC Graduate Bursary which is valued at $5,000, will be given to a graduate student in UOIT's Master of Information Technology Security program. The awards will be introduced on a graduated scale beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year.

"UOIT extends a warm thank you to CIBC for its extremely generous financial donation," said Dr. Ron Bordessa, president of UOIT. "The strong support of institutions such as CIBC provides UOIT with an opportunity to give all students - regardless of their financial situation - a chance to experience our unique teaching and learning approach, and receive the very best education to help them reach their greatest potential."

As part of its commitment to support the individuals and organizations that are working tirelessly to enrich the quality of life for Canadians in areas such as youth, education and health, CIBC is providing students at UOIT with increased access to postsecondary education. The contribution of $250,000 meets the criteria necessary to qualify for the Government of Ontario's matching program, the Ontario Trust for Student Support, to create a total endowment of $500,000.

"At CIBC, helping young people to reach their full potential is one focus of our community investment program and we are proud to support UOIT's students with these bursaries," said Ala Dragota, associate vice-president, Durham District, CIBC.

UOIT's Faculty of Business and Information Technology offers innovative programs in Commerce and Information Technology which provide a useful balance between theory and applied learning. Unique features of UOIT's Faculty of Business and Information Technology include the Hacker Research Lab, which provides students with the facilities to develop IT security strategies and skills, and the UOIT Edge capstone study project, which helps students gain the marketable skills needed to open the door to challenging and rewarding careers.

The announcement was made during the UOIT Orientation Week Dinner held on campus for students and faculty. The event is part of several initiatives taking place this week to welcome first-year students to campus.
