Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT welcomes 4,300 students to campus

Ontario's only laptop-based university continues to experience significant growth

OSHAWA, Ont. - UOIT announced today that it will welcome approximately 4,300 students to campus this morning as classes begin at Ontario's only laptop-based university.

Located in Oshawa, Ontario, UOIT's award-winning campus has experienced significant growth since opening its doors in 2003, with enrolment growing to more than 4,000 students - including over 1,600 new first-year students for the 2006-2007 academic year - in just three short years.

"More students than ever are choosing UOIT because we offer highly sought-after programs in a leading-edge learning environment. Students can connect with their professors and each other any time and anywhere," said Richard Levin, vice-president of Strategic Enrolment Management and Registrar. "Our students have the opportunity to learn from world-class professors, participate in hands-on research, and gain the real-world experience that will put them one step ahead when they graduate."

Students from across Canada and around the world are enrolled in the university's 30 different undergraduate and graduate programs in areas such as Business and Information Technology; Education; Engineering and Applied Science; Energy Systems and Nuclear Science; Health Sciences; Science; and Criminology, Justice, and Policy Studies.

In addition, new graduate and undergraduate programs such as the Master of Information Technology (MITS) program - the first of its kind in Canada and one of the few IT security graduate degree programs in the world - are developed each year to meet the demands of today's knowledge-driven economy.

"UOIT extends a warm welcome to students as they make their way on to campus this morning," said Dr. Ron Bordessa, president of UOIT. "We are committed to their success and look forward to sharing our unique and innovative approach to education as we challenge and inspire students to push their own boundaries of thinking and learning."

The range of UOIT's challenging and innovative programs spans seven different faculties and schools that combined boast one of the highest rates of professors with PhDs among Canadian universities. In addition, students at UOIT have an opportunity to collaborate with professors to gain valuable research experience that includes co-authoring and publishing research papers.

"This year, students are aware of the many benefits that come from learning from professors who bring practical and theoretical experience to the classroom and lab, giving students an opportunity to combine that knowledge with their own ideas to create real solutions that will make an impact in the community," said Evan Muller-Cheng, president of the Student Association.

With undergraduate and graduate programs constantly under development, a state-of-the-art Athletic Centre scheduled to open in June 2007, and part of the largest and most comprehensive investment in the Canadian automotive industry - the Automotive Centre of Excellence - scheduled to open in 2008, UOIT is committed to providing students with the best education to help them reach their greatest potential.
