UOIT to host second Energy and the Environment Day

250 local students to connect with their inner scientist while exploring university
OSHAWA, Ont. - Interested in discovering the next Charles Darwin, Dr. Albert Einstein, Dr. Marie Curie or Dr. David Suzuki? Now's your chance. Over 250 junior high and high school students from Durham Region will have a chance to move out of the classroom and into the lab on Wednesday as they learn about the latest science, energy, and environmental research at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) second Energy and the Environment Day.

Part of a $240,000 three-year project funded by the Ontario government's Youth Science and Technology Outreach Program and held in collaboration with Youth Science Foundation (YSF) Canada, the event will give students an opportunity to visit the university's science labs and geothermal well field, hear about the UOIT and Durham College solar vehicle, and visit Friends of Second Marsh, the largest remaining urban wetland in the Greater Toronto Area.

Attendees will also hear presentations covering the latest research in areas including risk management, the oil peak, fuel cells and hydrogen, advanced energy systems, water pollution and aquatic ecosystems, learn more about YSF Canada's SMARTS network, and find out how they can play a role in preserving our planet. As part of the Energy and the Environment Day initiative, UOIT research teams will also be mentoring students as they develop science projects of their own to be judged next spring.
