Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Schneider Electric Canada donates $250,000 in equipment to UOIT's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science

Engineering students receive major increase in training opportunities OSHAWA, Ont. - Schneider Electric - a world leader in electrical distribution, industrial control and automation products, systems, and services - announced today that it will contribute $250,000 worth of equipment to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science laboratories.

The latest in automation technology including programmable logic controllers, human machine interfaces, software, motion control servo drives, sensors, relays, timers, switches, and safety products such as light barriers and safety mats, will be placed inside UOIT's Mechatronics and Robotics, Robotics and Automation, and Power Systems labs for student training. It will also be used for Integrated Manufacturing coursework and play a role in the university's Capstone Design projects, which require students to create a comprehensive solution for a specific engineering problem using their design skills.

These industrial products are used to monitor and control manufacturing processes - such as bottling lines, material handling and packaging operations - and to ensure the safe operation of an automated system.

"On behalf of UOIT I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Schneider Electric Canada for its generous support," said Dr. Ronald Bordessa, president of UOIT. "Through consultation with leading businesses and industry partners such as Schneider Electric Canada, UOIT is constantly developing programs that meet the needs of today's knowledge-based economy. Ensuring our students have access to state-of-the-art equipment is key to our success and thanks to Schneider Electric Canada's significant contribution, more UOIT students than ever will be able to collaborate with their professors in the classroom and the lab."

Providing resources to help develop the capabilities of student engineers and engineering technologists is part of Schneider Electric Canada's commitment to investing in the future of the Canadian electrical industry. Schneider Electric's donation will assist UOIT's students with realizing their potential and help them learn the skills they need to make an impact on society when they graduate.

"Schneider Electric recognizes the high calibre of the students and future graduates of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology", said Gary Abrams, president, Schneider Electric Canada. "In addition to this donation, we are also seeking to expand our partnership by offering co-op and intern opportunities to UOIT students and graduates. This initiative will bridge the gap between what students learn in the classroom and the application of the equipment in industry. We want to assist these future leaders of tomorrow as much as we can to ensure both their future success and ours."

UOIT's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science integrates the best practices and successes of some of the leading universities in Canada and the world, with new and innovative ideas. It is housed within the new 40,000-square-foot Ontario Power Generation Engineering building, which offers classrooms, academic offices and 17 state-of-the-art labs in areas including rapid prototyping and manufacturing, combustion and engines, mechatronics, and emerging energy systems featuring solar, wind, hydrogen and fuel-cell technology.

In addition, the Automotive Centre of Excellence, part of the largest and most comprehensive investment in the Canadian automotive industry, will open at UOIT in 2008. Slated to be a key feature of the UOIT Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, this premier automotive research and development centre will feature an environmental wind tunnel, which can test vehicles under various weather conditions, and a four-post shaker system, which can test a vehicle's ability to handle a range of road conditions. It will also include academic-scale equipment for teaching and research, as well as large-scale, industrial testing equipment for use by students, faculty, and industry.
