Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT to offer in-depth look at teacher candidate selection process

More than 700 potential students to interview for coveted spots with Faculty of Education

OSHAWA, Ont. - Members of the media will have exclusive access to the teacher candidate selection process at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) next week, as the university begins the practice of choosing the students who will study at its Oshawa campus this August. The selected students will be given the opportunity to become new-generation teachers through access to UOIT's world-class professors and high-tech teaching tools designed to make learning more dynamic and effective in the decades to come.

UOIT is offering an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at what it takes for students to earn a coveted spot with one of its Bachelor of Education programs. There will be opportunities to speak with student candidates and the educational leaders conducting interviews, and to observe students as they write case analyses.

More than 1,700 applicants have applied for admission to the Faculty of Education, attempting to take advantage of UOIT's reputation as a teaching centre of excellence that is graduating teachers with strong roots in math, science, English, and visual arts, and leading-edge teaching skills - all of which are required by classrooms around the globe.

The focus on these core areas has ensured that UOIT is the institution of choice for teaching candidates each year and explains why its Faculty of Education graduates are in high demand across Ontario, Canada and abroad. In 2006, more than 86 percent found employment in the education sector.
