Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT unveils RBC Conference Room in recognition of $250,000 donation

Generous gift helping to enhance leading-edge learning environment

OSHAWA, Ont. - Dr. Ronald Bordessa, president of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), welcomed RBC representatives to campus today for the unveiling of the RBC Conference Room. The room is being named in recognition of RBC's ongoing support and partnership, which includes a $250,000 donation that is being used to enhance the university's Business and Information Technology building and leading-edge learning environment.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled outside the room, which is used for university meetings and activities related to the Faculty of Business and Information Technology and UOIT's Management Development Centre.

"RBC is committed to building a better Canada by helping improve the economic, environmental and social fabric of the communities where we work and live," said Barry Lockwood, regional vice-president at RBC. "Our support of education and youth through programs like the ones offered by UOIT is one of the most important ways we hope to do this."

UOIT chose the Business and Information Technology building to be the home of the conference room in recognition of RBC's standing as one of Canada's leading businesses. The university offers a number of business and technology focused courses, many of them unique in Ontario and even Canada. Case in point, UOIT's Master of Information Technology Security is the first of its kind in Canada and is one of the few specialized IT Security graduate degree programs available in the world. Through theory and applied learning, the program enables students to develop an extensive understanding of business and information technology security, while polishing communication skills and examining business and IT ethics in a team environment.

"We would like to thank RBC for its continued support of UOIT. This very generous donation will make a measurable impact on the delivery of our business and technology programs," said Dr. Bordessa. "We are pleased to dedicate the RBC Conference Room to RBC as it will serve as a continuous reminder of the important role leading businesses such as RBC play in delivering a well-rounded educational experience that inspires UOIT students to reach their greatest potential."

The Management Development Centre is another example of the many ways UOIT is working to meet the needs of today's business leaders. The centre's Master's Certificate programs are designed to equip business executives, managers and professionals with the tools and skills required for successful careers in their respective fields. It also provides them with the broad understanding necessary to face a rapidly changing marketplace.
