Acclaimed mathematician John Mighton to visit UOIT and share formula for success during guest lecture

Well-known scholar and author was also a consultant for Academy Award-winning film

OSHAWA, Ont. - The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) will welcome Dr. John Mighton, a mathematician, national best-selling author and award-winning playwright, to its campus on Friday, November 30. Sponsored by UOIT's faculties of Science and Education and Office of Research Services, the guest lecture will give students a chance to hear the multi-talented Mighton speak about his unusual combination of careers in the arts and mathematics.

A consultant on the film Good Will Hunting, a story about a math genius played by Matt Damon, Dr. Mighton also had a cameo in the film and wrote his own lines. He completed a PhD in mathematics at the University of Toronto and is currently a fellow of the Fields Institute for Mathematical Research and an adjunct professor of Mathematics at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Mighton has also won a Governor-General's Award for his play Possible Worlds and is the founder of the educational charity Junior Undiscovered Mathematical Prodigies (JUMP), which offers math tutoring for children. JUMP is an initiative born out his life goal: to help dispel the myth that children have fixed or innate abilities and help them reach their full potential.
