UOIT hosts Science Research for Health Day

High school students will be part of university experience and learn about innovative research studies and careers

OSHAWA, Ont. - The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is preparing to welcome hundreds of Durham Region high school students to campus next week for a UOIT Science Research for Health Day, an insightful symposium designed to connect local secondary school students with today's leaders in health-oriented scientific research.

The day will consist of a series of 20-minute presentations by UOIT professors on topics such as Nutrition, Genes and Health: A Better Way to Health, Environment and Cancer, and Parasites and Parasitic Diseases, and will also include question and answer periods and tours of the campus, including the science laboratories. UOIT graduate and undergraduate students will be present during the question and answer period and will lead the tours.

In addition, the workshop You Are What You Eat will give students a first-hand perspective into UOIT's leading-edge learning environment, including the laptops and program-specific software utilized by students in the university's unique Faculty of Science programs.

The symposium is the result of a $15,000 grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research that was awarded to Dr. Julia Green-Johnson, an associate professor of biology at UOIT. The UOIT Faculty of Science has developed a reputation for offering innovative events and activities each year that are designed to mentor secondary school students and introduce them to the many career paths in the sciences and the innovative research work associated with them.
