The gift includes $100,000 to establish the HSBC Bank Canada Endowment Fund to support UOIT students in perpetuity. The donation qualifies for matching funds through the provincial government's Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS), bringing the total endowment to $200,000. In addition, $25,000 has been directed towards the creation of the HSBC Bank Canada Awards to be distributed over a five-year period. Through this initiative by HSBC Bank Canada, a total of $225,000 has been generated for the benefit of UOIT students.

"At HSBC Bank Canada, we believe that access to higher education is key to ensuring the future prosperity of the country," said Linda Seymour, senior vice-president, Ontario Region, HSBC Bank Canada. "We are very pleased that these new awards will help deserving students achieve their goals at UOIT and we hope that the recipients will go on to make significant contributions to the community in the future. HSBC Bank Canada is growing and with the opening of our new Oshawa branch, we will continue to support the community where we live and work."

The HSBC Bank Canada Awards will support third- and fourth-year students who are studying in UOIT's Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) program and in need of financial assistance. Award recipients will also have achieved an academic average of 80 per cent and demonstrated positive contributions to the community and campus life.

The inaugural recipients of the HSBC Bank Canada Awards are Terence Adam Doran and Tyler Duffin.

"On behalf of current and future Faculty of Business and Information Technology Commerce students here at UOIT, I would like to thank everyone at HSBC Bank Canada for this generous gift," said Dr. Ronald Bordessa, president of UOIT.
