Ontario Cancer Institute director visits UOIT to kick off Purdue Pharma Visiting Lecture Series

Inaugural speaker Dr. Benjamin Neel on campus next week

OSHAWA, Ont. - In an effort to bring Canada's leading scientists to its students and the community, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's Faculty of Science will begin its annual Purdue Pharma Visiting Lecture Series next week. The series will commence with its inaugural speaker, Dr. Benjamin Neel, director of the Ontario Cancer Institute, and is designed to expose both students and the public to a broad range of research topics of critical importance to the health of Canadians.

Dr. Neel, a professor of medical biophysics with the University of Toronto and an internationally recognized expert in the field of cellular signal transduction, will discuss The Tyrosine Phosphatase Shp2: One Signaling Molecule, Multiple Human Diseases. Dr. Neel was the inaugural recipient of the Gertrude Elion Award of the American Association for Cancer Research and previously held the title of director of the Cancer Biology program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston, Massachusetts.

The series is being funded thanks to a generous donation by Purdue Pharma, a member of the research-based pharmaceutical industry. Purdue Pharma's mission is to advance health care through research, education and pharmaceutical innovation. Its Canadian headquarters are located in Pickering, Ontario.

UOIT continues to attract the interest and support of leading corporations such as Purdue Pharma, whose efforts make a direct impact on students and the community. Through state-of-the-art laboratories and research collaborations, UOIT's Faculty of Science students gain invaluable hands-on experience, preparing them for future careers as next-generation scientists or post degree studies in areas such as medicine or graduate school.
