UOIT gears up to welcome elementary and secondary students to fourth annual Durham Regional Science Fair

Competition will showcase young scientists of the future and recognize excellence in computer, physical, biological, and engineering sciences

OSHAWA, Ont. - Join faculty, staff and students from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT's) Faculty of Science as they welcome Durham Region students in Grades 4 to 12 to campus Saturday, April 12 for the fourth annual Durham Regional Science Fair.

Organized in collaboration with Sci-Tech Ontario, the 2008 fair will showcase the talents of 30 to 40 students and close to 25 projects. Prizes will be awarded in the categories of computer, physical, biological, and engineering sciences, along with the Environmental Innovator Award. The latter award is sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and will be given to an outstanding project that demonstrates a creative approach to cleaner air, land or water.

Sci-Tech Ontario is a volunteer, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support and celebrate the participation and excellence of Ontario's elementary and secondary school students in science and technology.

Increasing the interest of youth in pursuing careers in science is critical for Canada in remaining innovative in a global economy. The Durham Regional Science Fair is one of many events hosted throughout the year by the Faculty of Science to introduce young scientists to the many challenging and exciting opportunities that await them in science-oriented careers.

Last year's winner went on to represent Durham Region at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Truro, Nova Scotia, and won the gold medal in the Junior Physical and Mathematical Sciences division, as well as the Renewable Energy Award presented by Ontario Power Generation. This year's winner will compete at this year's fair in Ottawa, Ontario, from Saturday, May 10 to Sunday, May 18.
