Faculty of Science students make the grade at medical school

Three students graduating from the UOIT Faculty of Science have recently been accepted to medical school programs at various Canadian universities, another affirmation of the exceptional education students receive at UOIT.

"Acceptance into medical programs can be extremely challenging and many individuals apply more than once," said Dr. William Smith, dean of the Faculty of Science. "This is an incredible accomplishment for these students and a shining example that the innovative programs at UOIT provide students with a solid foundation to pursue their future goals, whether it is to begin a career upon graduation or to pursue post-degree studies such as medicine or graduate studies. In addition to these students entering medical schools, several of our other students have received prestigious scholarships to pursue graduate studies."

The students who will begin medical programs in the fall are 2008 graduates Naheed Dosani, attending McMaster University, and Shaqil Peermohamed, attending the University of Calgary, while 2007 UOIT graduate Katey Jakins will be attending the University of Toronto.

They offered their thoughts on how UOIT prepared them to pursue medical studies:

"UOIT exposed me to a variety of academic and non-academic experiences that I feel allowed me to produce a strong application for medical schools in Ontario. The professors, teaching assistants, staff and administrators all have the best interests of each individual student in mind and are always willing to help. Small class sizes, access to instructors, a strong student community and the family atmosphere present at UOIT made me feel like it was my second home and motivated me to excel during my time on campus."

- Naheed Dosani, 2008 Bachelor of Science in Biological Science graduate.

"I strongly believe that an undergraduate education at UOIT has not only provided me with a strong work ethic but has prepared me in a practical sense for a future career in medicine. Medicine is becoming increasingly collaborative - I strongly feel that UOIT reflects this ideal, encouraging interaction between students, helpful and passionate professors, and hard-working faculty members. Finally, the integration of technology in the field of medicine is becoming quite common; as a laptop-based university, UOIT has inspired me to integrate technology as a useful learning tool in my future studies. UOIT has instilled in me both a strong work ethic and valuable technical skills so that I can apply myself to the fullest potential and achieve my best in medical school."

-Shaqil Peermohamed,2008 Bachelor of Science in Biological Science graduate.

"UOIT was the perfect school for me to study the sciences in preparation for medical school. Thanks to the small class sizes, I had plenty of personal feedback from my professors, laboratory instructors and teaching assistants, which ultimately helped me reach my academic goals. Also, as an undergraduate student, the research experience that I gained proved to be invaluable on my medical school applications."

-Katey Jakins, 2007 Bachelor of Science in Chemistry graduate
