CSI UOIT - Crime pays for the United Way

Members of the public will become crime-scene investigators, solve a murder and raise money for dedicated community organization

OSHAWA, ON. - Dusting for fingerprints, interpreting bloodstain patterns and examining excavated bones are just a few of the crime scene investigation techniques that will be performed in the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) unique Crime Scene House, as members of the public help solve a murder and raise funds for the United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge.

Tickets are still available for CSI UOIT - Crime Pays for the United Way, which is being held on Saturday, October 25, with the Faculty of Science hosting sessions from 9 to 11 a.m., noon to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Participants will take part in a variety of crime scene investigation activities that will help lead them to determining the murder suspect based on collected evidence and motive.

"This event is an amazing opportunity for the UOIT Faculty of Science to invite the community to join us and receive a first-hand look into the training and dedication involved in crime scene investigations," said Dr. Shari Forbes, director, UOIT Forensic Science program and assistant professor, Faculty of Science. "We are honoured to host this fundraising initiative with such a dedicated community organization."

Each session will feature up to 50 participants and three CSI iPods will be awarded throughout the day, along with other giveaways. Tickets are $25 each or $40 for a pair and available by calling the United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge at 905.686.0606.

"We are thrilled that members of the UOIT Forensic Science program have planned such an innovative fundraising initiative to support the United Way," said John Smith, the United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge's 2008 campaign chairman. "This is a great example of how members of the community can support vital social programs - and have a great time in the process."

The only university facility of its kind in Ontario, the Crime Scene House is where the Faculty of Science stages crime scenes as part of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Forensic Science program. Students receive hands-on training in the practical skills required to excel in careers involving forensic investigation, including learning to collect and analyze data such as DNA, fingerprints, footwear impressions and tool marks.

The United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge provides funding to 24 agencies and over 50 programs that offer assistance to those in need within the community.
