Are you ready for a robot rumble? UOIT hosts third annual engineering robotics competition

Twenty-seven teams from across Ontario to participate

OSHAWA, ON. - Some of the best and brightest high school students from across Ontario will travel to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) next week to take part in a sumobot showdown at the third annual UOIT Engineering Robotics Competition on Saturday, November 29.

The event, which features autonomous robots assembled by high school students going head-to-head with other competitors' robot designs in a sumo-style match, is the culmination of eight weeks of preparation. Three workshops were held at UOIT through October and November where students assembled their robots, learned engineering theory and skills and took part in preliminary competitions under the guidance of faculty, students and other volunteers from UOIT's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. For the third consecutive year, BRIC Engineered Systems is sponsoring the event.

This year's contest will feature 27 different teams of students representing 20 high schools from across Ontario. Teams from Barrie, Bracebridge and Belleville will compete for prizes along with four schools from the Durham Region and 13 schools from the Greater Toronto Area, including defending champion, Sir William Mullock Secondary School in Newmarket.

The annual competition allows high school students to learn more about robotics while discovering the benefits and many career pathways and possibilities that come with pursuing post-secondary studies in engineering. UOIT's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science fosters independent thinking, problem-solving and collaborative skills in order to produce the leaders of tomorrow.
