Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT application numbers climb way above 2009

OSHAWA, ON. - Thanks in large part to its career-focused programs, hands-on research opportunities, technology-rich learning environment and much more, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is continuing to realize significantly more student applicants.

Following a January 13 secondary school application deadline, the Ontario Universities' Application Centre had received 7,730 applications to UOIT programs, a 13.5-per cent increase over the same period in 2009. This growth includes a 13.6-per cent increase in secondary school applications, well above the provincewide increase of 2.7 per cent.

The strong numbers come in the wake of substantial enrolment gains announced in September 2009, when the university experienced double-digit growth over the same time a year earlier.

"Prospective and current students regularly tell us that UOIT offers a dynamic education that will prepare them to be leaders in the workforce of tomorrow," said UOIT Registrar Victoria Choy. "This continues to be reflected in application and enrolment numbers and the fact that we are attracting increasing numbers of students from across the Greater Toronto Area. Along with offering students programs in high-demand areas of study, state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, and the opportunity to work on research projects, we're conveniently located right here in the GTA."

The next step for students is to narrow their choices and select their post-secondary home beginning in Fall 2010. To help with that process, UOIT will provide applicants, their families and friends with a first-hand look at its award-winning campus during a winter open house planned for Saturday, February 27. These guests will hear from current faculty and students; tour campus; learn about the services designed to maximize their success, including a first-year experience co-ordinator who helps with the adjustment to post-secondary studies; and information and presentations by each of UOIT's academic faculties.
