Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT honours fallen soldiers with Project Hero scholarship

Children of deceased military personnel to benefit from free tuition and on-campus housing

OSHAWA, ON - In recognition of the heroism and personal sacrifices of fallen Canadian Forces personnel, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is waiving tuition and residence fees for the dependents of the men and women killed while serving in an active military mission. The scholarships are part of Project Hero, an initiative aimed to help children of deceased Canadian soldiers obtain a post-secondary education free of financial constraints.

"Our Canadian soldiers make tremendous personal sacrifices to serve their country and UOIT is committed to honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice," said Dr. Ronald Bordessa, president, UOIT. "Helping the children of these brave individuals pursue a post-secondary education that will help them become a next-generation professional and go on to make an impact on society is our way to pay tribute to these men and women and their families."

UOIT will provide the full amount of tuition for four years of an undergraduate degree and the first year of on-campus residence fees to eligible recipients. The Project Hero scholarship program at UOIT is effective from September 2009 to August 31, 2014. Individuals awarded the scholarship before August 31, 2014 will continue to benefit from their scholarship for the remainder of their four-year study period.

In addition to being a dependent of a Canadian Forces personnel member who was killed during an active military mission, recipients of the scholarship must be:

  • Under the age of 26 years old; and
  • Registered as a full-time undergraduate student at UOIT, in a program of study eligible for funding by the province of Ontario.

Project Hero was co-founded by Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Reed and retired General Rick Hillier to provide support to the sons and daughters of fallen Canadian soldiers. Together they have been working to bring as many schools as possible on board to support this very worthwhile initiative.
