Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Grand opening of UOIT's one-of-a-kind Clean Energy Research Laboratory

OSHAWA, ON - Journalists are invited to join the Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Energy, as he attends the official opening of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) new Clean Energy Research Laboratory (CERL), a multi-million dollar lab unlike any other in the world.

CERL will house the first lab-scale demonstration of a copper-chlorine cycle for thermochemical water splitting and nuclear hydrogen production. Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier of the future and potentially a major solution to the problem of climate change.

Among those joining Minister Duguid for this important event will be Dr. Ronald Bordessa, UOIT president and vice-chancellor; Dr. Richard Marceau, provost and vice-president, Academic; Dr. Greg Naterer, associate dean, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and Canada Research Chair in Advanced Energy Systems; and Wayne Arthurs, MPP for Pickering-Scarborough East.

The CERL celebration also includes a salute from the famous Canadian Snowbirds Demonstration Team which will stage a fly-by during the opening ceremonies.

Short guided tours of the lab will be available in small groups following the presentation inside CERL.
