Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

The UOIT Ridgebacks women's hockey team welcomed the national team of China to the Campus Ice Centre on October 25. In what was a very entertaining match, China skated away with a 3-2 victory over the Ridgebacks.

"What a great experience and chance of a lifetime for everyone on the team," said UOIT head coach Karen Nystrom. "It was excellent exposure for our women's hockey program and the facilities we have on campus. It was alsoa good opportunity for China tocontinue to improveas they prepare for the 2014 Olympics."

Tang Liang led the visitors with two goals and an assist including the game winner midway through the third period. Both of UOIT's goals came in the third period as Megan Steacy and Jill Morillo found the back of the net as the Ridgebacks' comeback attempt came up just short.

For China, the exhibition game was the latest in a series of games against Ontario University Athletics (OUA) teams as the country prepares for the 2014 Olympic Games. It was also UOIT's first competition against a women's hockey national team in the program's four-year history.

The Ridgebacks return to regular season OUA play on Saturday, October 30 against the Brock Badgers. Game time at the Campus Ice Centre is 3:30 p.m.
