Innovation Durham Northumberland announced by Minister of Research and Innovation
December 20, 2010
OSHAWA, ON - The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is pleased to be a founding member of a new initiative announced today by The Honourable Glen Murray, Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation (MRI).
During a visit to UOIT and Durham College, Minister Murray announced the funding and opening of Innovation Durham Northumberland (IDN), a new Regional Innovation Centre that is part of the Ontario Network of Excellence (ONE). The province-wide network developed by MRI provides resources for on-the-ground commercialization and service support for entrepreneurs and businesses, including access to a broad range of experts, researchers, academics, private sector companies, government and investors, who can help sell an idea and grow a business worldwide.
The formation of IDN is the culmination of a five-year visionary process driven by the Durham Strategic Energy Alliance (DSEA) Board in conjunction with its various member partners, a group which includes UOIT, Durham College, the Region of Durham and the various Durham lakeshore municipalities. The DSEA wanted to ensure all opportunities to pursue funding and resources were being realized in Durham Region and Northumberland County for all of its private sector and institutional partners.
Facilities for IDN activities and initiatives will be housed in Oshawa at UOIT, in Whitby at Durham College's Whitby Campus and co-located in Cobourg with the Northumberland Manufacturer's Association.
