he University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) Faculty of Business and Information Technology (FBIT) is celebrating an impressive showing by students at the sixth-annual Certified Management Accountants (CMA) Ontario Case Competition.

The team of UOIT Accounting students Iskander Abubaker, Arujunan Balakrishnan, Matthew Hook and John Oentoro took second-place honours and accepted a $2,500 cheque at the event held January 29 at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

"This competition taught us the importance of change leadership through a rigorous business simulation," said fourth-year Accounting student John Oentoro. "We were faced with difficult decisions, which included doing our best to come to a balance with many users under very tight time constraints. Not only were we faced with making decisions regarding our corporate social responsibility initiative, but also having to face the consequences from our stakeholders."

"We are extremely proud of the achievement of our students and how they are continuing to demonstrate the strength of our programs here at UOIT," said Dr. Pamela Ritchie, dean, FBIT. "Results like this on the provincial stage are a tremendous credit to our students, professors and faculty. It underscores FBIT's and UOIT's overall commitment to providing an outstanding learning environment and allowing students to solve significant corporate issues by applying the knowledge they have gained."

Through the Accounting program, UOIT provides a leading-edge and dynamic understanding of for-profit and public accounting as well as insight on the corporate world.Developed in conjunction with Canada's internationally recognized accounting bodies (CMA, Charterted Accountants of Canada and the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada), the Accounting curriculum encourages analysis of case issues and policies within the context of existing organizations and issues they face.

The UOIT Accounting Association (UOAA) also held its annual case competition entitled Breaking Barriers on February 5. Presentations can be found at the UOAA YouTube channel.
