Campus community raises more than $26,000

On March 9 faculty, staff and students turned the campus pink for its annual Power of Pink (POP) Breast Cancer Awareness Day. This year's event raised an incredible $26,061.76 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Ontario Chapter and the Durham-based, Gala of Hope. This year's tally represents a 14.7 per cent increase over last year.

Participants of the day were treated to a fun-filled day of games, draws and office competitions. They were able to purchase treats ranging from bake sale goods to fancy mocktails, T-shirts and hoodies. The event concluded with the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which offered participants a chance to mingle and chat with colleagues.

The results of the office competitions are:

  • Most Funds Raised - The School of Health & Community Services - $2,602.25 - Valentine Bake Sale, School Pink T-Shirts and basket draws for donations;
  • Honourable mention -Your SA/Student Centre for the event's second highest funds raised, as well as the highest funds raised by any student group for the POP, $1,535;
  • Most Informative presentation - Student Services, Durham College - bake sale, draw for prizes and Pop a Boobaloon;
  • Honourable mention - The Campus Health Centre - Mobile Cart Unit;
  • Most Creative presentation - School of Skilled Trades, Apprenticeship & Renewable Technology, Whitby campus - Timed skilled trades challenges, dart board challenge, auction and various games; and
  • Honourable mention - UOIT Varsity Rowing team.
