Oshawa, ON - The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a leading post-secondary institution in the Czech Republic. Together with the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague(ICT Prague), UOIT will collaborate in Learning Technologies, all fields of Science and for the purpose of scientific and cultural exchange.

The MOU was signed by UOIT President Dr. Ronald Bordessa and Dr. Richard Marceau, provost and vice-president, Academic, UOIT. ICT Prague was represented by Dr. Stanislav Labik, dean, Faculty of Chemical Engineering, which has received funding from the European Union to initiate a laptop-based program similar to the one pioneered by UOIT, the first of its kind in Ontario.

"This agreement recognizes UOIT's international leadership in the use of information and communication technologies for learning," said Dr. Bill Muirhead, associate provost, Academic, UOIT. "We look forward to working with ICT Prague and Dr. Labik in building an enhanced web-centric learning environment modeled after the innovations pioneered by our faculty and Information Technology Services at UOIT. We also look forward to expanding our co-operation to new areas of collaboration concerning mobile learning and the development of web-based learning resources for science students."

"The ICT Prague co-operates with more than 100 universities and institutions in Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan and other countries," said Dr. Labik. "We hope that the MOU signed with UOIT will help us to extend our international collaboration involving the implementation of science-oriented learning technologies."

The MOU will also offer UOIT's Faculty of Science potential new avenues in research and student collaboration.ICT Prague is particularly interested in developing a new program modelled after UOIT's extremely popular Forensic Science program, and in exploring other opportunities in Chemistry.

"This MOU presents an opportunity to expand existing student exchange programs and collaborations in science with institutions in Germany, Italy and Japan," said Dr. Lennaert van Veen, assistant professor, Faculty of Science and chair, Science International Relations Committee, UOIT.

"This MOU further recognizes the importance UOIT's Faculty of Science places on international research collaboration and on providing international student opportunities," said Dr. William Smith, dean, Faculty of Science.
