May 19 celebration for the founding dean of the Faculty of Science

Faculty and staff members in the Faculty of Science were joined by members of the UOIT campus community (past and present) to pay tribute to Dr. William Smith, founding dean, who will retire on June 30.

A long line of people came to the podium to salute Dr. Smith for his remarkable achievements as leader of the faculty over UOIT's first eight-and-a-half years. Dr. Smith who was joined by a large contingent of family members for the celebration, was recognized for forging the development of a wide range of interdisciplinary programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

 
 * May 19 celebration for the founding dean of the Faculty of ScienceDr. Smith was hired by UOIT in 2002 to become the founding dean following a long and distinguished academic career that began at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and continued at the University of Guelph.

In honour of Dr. Smith's legacy at UOIT, the Founding Dean of Science Graduation Award has been established to reward a graduating student of the Faculty of Science for his/her outstanding academic achievement.
