New UOIT certificate program aimed at small business owners/managers
Essential aspects of business management covered
September 9, 2011
Oshawa, ON – Building on its success in delivering executive, information technology and leadership training programs, this fall the Management Development Centre (MDC) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is launching its innovative new Small Business Management Certificate program.
Four courses will be held on Wednesdays, starting in October. Each full-day session will be held at UOIT’s north Oshawa location. The program is developed and led by a professional with years of business experience. Topics include:
- Technology – October 5;
- Finance – October 19;
- Marketing – November 2; and
- Human resources – November 16.
“We’re targeting existing business owners and managers who are asking themselves ‘how can I move my business forward from here?’,” explains Stephen Rose, director, MDC. “We also recognize people still need to run their business, so our program is structured to allow them to learn while they continue to work.”
The MDC’s certificate program is distinct because it’s aimed at established businesses that are seeking advice and practical, hands-on tools and techniques to help them continue to be successful.
“There are already excellent courses and programs to help startup businesses, however, we realized that access to greater expertise is needed for those who are just beyond that stage,” continues Mr. Rose.
Business owners and managers face many challenges including setting business goals, recruiting and retaining the right employees, attracting investors and venture capital, leveraging the latest marketing strategies as well as putting in place sound financial management practices and tools to run their businesses. The Small Business Management Certificate program covers all of these topics and more.
“We know business owners are passionate about business but might need guidance to help them see beyond the day-to-day issues,” adds Mr. Rose. “They want help with the larger, long-term picture while still focusing on short-term goals. Our certificate program offers straightforward and practical strategies and personal attention so attendees get what they need.”
Participants will receive take-away resources including detailed self-assessments in all program areas, action plan templates, a SWOT analysis, strategies to manage stress and improve business wellness, marketing tools and e-marketing strategies. Class sizes will be small to encourage one-on-one instructor interaction and networking among participants who can share knowledge with each other.
