Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

The UOIT Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS) takes many steps to ensure safety for students and faculty members. The faculty has committees that oversee health and safety in the program and also trains students in relevant health and safety matters to ensure they learn and comply with appropriate safety measures and standards.

In recognition of his contribution to advancing health and safety education in post-secondary institutions, Dr. Marc Rosen, Professor, FEAS, has received the Minerva Canada Education Award of Honour.

The Minerva Canada Education Award of Honour recognizes instructors who integrate safety into all programs to encourage the production of safer designs, devices, processes and systems.

“The faculty blends health, safety and environmental management into the curriculum, and this is a requirement for maintaining the accredited status of our Engineering programs,” said Dr. Rosen. “Health and safety is taught in many of our courses to ensure students develop an appreciation of it and an ability to manage it.”

Dr. Rosen has taken many steps to ensure health and safety, as well as environmental awareness for students and faculty members since he came to UOIT as the Founding Dean of FEAS in 2002. He is currently a participant in Minerva Canada’s ongoing Health and Safety Engineering Student Teaching Modules project as a module developer, and has developed four teaching modules for Minerva Canada over 10 years, some which are used at UOIT as well as other universities.

“We consider it imperative that health and safety be taught well to our Engineering students, and are thrilled to see Dr. Rosen’s efforts in this area acknowledged in this way,” said Dr. Tarlochan Sidhu, Dean, FEAS. “This award highlights the extent and quality of Dr. Rosen’s teaching.”

Dr. Rosen has played a significant role in implementing health and safety in engineering designs to promote occupational as well as public health and safety.
