Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT Professor Dr. Igor Pioro receives honorary doctorate in Ukraine

The Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) proudly salutes Dr. Igor Pioro, Professor, Associate Dean and Director of the Graduate Program upon receiving an honorary doctorate from the National Technical University of Ukraine (Kiev Polytechnic Institute (KPI)). Dr. Pioro was presented with the distinction on June 3 in Kiev, Ukraine.

This most recent recognition of Dr. Pioro for career achievement, research excellence and contributions to engineering follows a remarkable list of awards and honours, which include being inducted this spring as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC). Dr. Pioro’s other recent awards include: Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); the Education and Communication Award from the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS); and the UOIT Research Excellence Award.

“The university, faculty colleagues and industry peers are extremely proud to see such a high academic honour bestowed upon Dr. Pioro,” said Dr. Brent Lewis, Dean, FESNS. “He has set an exemplary standard for excellence throughout his career and richly deserves this prestigious award from the university where he began his studies in the 1970s. Dr. Pioro continues to bring tremendous honour and distinction to UOIT.”

Dr. Pioro received a Master of Applied Science in Thermal Physics from KPI in 1979. He completed his PhD in 1983 and also received a Doctor of Technical Sciences in 1992.
