Dr. Bernadette Murphy, Professor and Kinesiology Lead in the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), received the prestigious A. E. Homewood Memorial Professorship at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) Undergraduate Awards Ceremony in Toronto, Ontario on November 14.

The award is presented for one year, with the possibility of a one-year renewal, to a member of the academic community who, over several years, has demonstrated a dedication to the principles and philosophy of health care through chiropractic, as professed by Dr. Homewood, former CMCC President. The recipient receives a $5,000 stipend for the term of the professorship, and is expected to make a presentation to the faculty and students at CMCC during the tenure of the professorship.

Dr. Murphy’s work focuses on the integral role of the central nervous system in maladaptive neural responses, which are implicated in both chronic musculoskeletal pain and depression. Her work has investigated the role of physical interventions such as spinal manipulation and exercise in facilitating the re-establishment of appropriate neural connections.

"Congratulations to Bernadette on her hard-earned success," said Dr. Ellen Vogel, Dean, FHS. "We wish her the best of luck over the tenure of the professorship. Our faculty, staff and students are immensely proud of the outstanding level of scholarship recognized through this significant award, and we applaud Bernadette on her many research-related accomplishments. We would also like to thank Dr. Jean Moss, CMCC President, for her continuing support and for the high-level recognition bestowed on our Kinesiology Lead."
