Students enrolled in the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS) have access to a collaborative study space, thanks to a generous donation from the Carpenters Union – Local 397.

In recognition of the union’s generous gift of $30,000 to support the General Motors of Canada Automotive Centre of Excellence’s (ACE) Integrated Research and Training Facility (IRTF), the university has placed a commemorative plaque in the student alcove on the third floor. The alcove offers a quiet spot for studying, for groups to gather and work on a project together, or for students to take a break and recharge between classes.

Dr. Tarlochan Sidhu, Dean, FEAS and Joel Neville, Local Union Co-ordinator, Carpenters Union – Local 397, unveiled the plaque on December 2.

"I would like to thank the Carpenters Union for supporting UOIT, our students and our commitment to excellence," said Dr. Sidhu. "Collaborative spaces, like this alcove, provide the means for new ideas to take root and make a difference for tomorrow. This contribution will not only propel students further ahead upon graduation, but will also strengthen our community as a whole."
