Former Supreme Court justice to speak at UOIT on October 26

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FSSH) will welcome the Honourable Ian Binnie to campus on Wednesday, October 26 as the first guest speaker in the Legal Studies program’s Distinguished Visitors Lecture Series.

Binnie is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC). He is known for groundbreaking legal decisions throughout his time on the SCC bench, including R v Marshall, which expanded Indigenous treaty rights. In his talk, entitled In Defence of Judicial Activism at the Supreme Court of Canada, he will discuss the role of political values in judicial decision-making.

  • When: Wednesday, October 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. (followed by a reception with light refreshments)
  • Where: 61 Charles Street Building, Room 216.
