Advocate for youth with disabilities to become the university’s new Director of Nursing
Janet McCabe, PhD, will begin her new role July 1

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology announces the appointment of Janet McCabe, PhD, as Director of Nursing, effective Saturday, July 1.
Dr. McCabe comes from the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Nursing where she most recently held the position of Acting Assistant Dean–Prince Albert and the North. She worked as a Registered Nurse in both acute and outpatient-based settings in Canada and the United States before pursuing a career in academia. Her career in pediatrics has influenced her teaching and research interests. She has a keen interest in the development of nursing as both a profession and a discipline.
Dr. McCabe's research is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and was previously supported through the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation and Special Olympics Canada. Her work focuses on the engagement and empowerment of children and youth with disabilities and their families, as it relates to participation in everyday life (particularly in physical activity) and within the health-care system. She focuses much of her attention on uncovering the hidden disparities between rural and urban settings.
She collaborates with the Unit for Critical Research in Health at the University of Ottawa, and currently holds an adjunct position with the School of Nursing, University of Ottawa. In 2014, she received the University of Saskatchewan’s Provost’s Award for Outstanding Teaching, in recognition of her outstanding teaching and educational leadership achievements.
Dr. McCabe received her PhD from the University of Ottawa, her Master of Education from the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario.
