Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Facing stiff competition in a field of 12 teams representing universities across Ontario, UOIT Accounting students posted an impressive third-place showing at a provincial competition hosted January 14 by the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor. The Regional Case Accounting Competition was sponsored by the Certified Management Accountants of Ontario (CMA).

The UOIT team faced a panel of 15 judges comprised of CMAs from the Windsor area and professors at the University of Windsor. Many of the other teams were made up of third- and fourth-year students; however, all four members of the UOIT Accounting team were Bachelor of Commerce students in just their first or second year.

Congratulations to Mohamed Rizwan Bachani (team leader, second year); Pushpinder Pabla (second year), Mohammad Soleman (second year); and David Belcastro (first year).

"This is a remarkable achievement by our students and speaks to the quality of students enrolled in UOIT’s Bachelor of Commerce program,” said Dr. Pamela Ritchie, dean, Faculty of Business and Information Technology. “We are extremely proud of these students who represented our program with such distinction. By outperforming many of their more-experienced peers from across Ontario, they clearly demonstrated their talent and the knowledge they have already gained in their earliest years at UOIT.”
