Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT invites aspiring young scientists to Science Rendezvous May 12

Family-friendly and free day of discovery and innovation makes science accessible for all

OSHAWA, ON – A free day of scientific fun and adventure for families is on tap Saturday, May 12 at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) as the popular Science Rendezvous returns to campus. Led by UOIT’s Faculty of Science, the annual event welcomes the community to take in a wide variety of exciting and highly-interactive activities that promote the importance of science and technology.

Whether visitors are of kindergarten age (and even younger), in high school, or have long forgotten the lessons they thought they learned in the science lab, there are dozens of activities for everyone to enjoy. The experiments, known as INVENTours, are hosted by UOIT faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students.

“From the INVENTours to the Science Cavalcade and the Biodiversity Gallery, Science Rendezvous offers so many hands-on opportunities for youngsters to explore and create,” said Laura Benninger, organizer of Science Rendezvous at UOIT. “The day is designed to inspire young people by de-mystifying science. Whatever question they may have about science, they are certain to find an answer from one of our expert volunteers.”

Popular activities returning for 2012 include dry ice rockets, liquid nitrogen ice cream and the famous flaming gummy bears.

New events include making your own sidewalk chalk, creating human-sized bubbles and don’t forget to stop by the Forensic Fun Zone for CSI Oshawa: the Missing Mascot Mystery. And if you really think you know your stuff when it comes to science, check out the Science Jeopardy event just after 2 p.m.!

Be sure to pick up a Science Rendezvous passport when you arrive to collect stickers and stamps from the various INVENTours and mini-workshops and for a chance to win a prize. Plan your day by picking up a copy of the Science Rendezvous program and register for Genes in a Bottle™ where participants can isolate DNA and wear it home in their very own DNA necklace (register early due to space limitations).

Admission and parking are free. Get express line access on May 12 by pre-registering at the Science Rendezvous 2012 website (http://www.uoit.ca/sciencerendezvous).

Food will be available for purchase on site.
