UOIT students advance to third round of Cisco NetRiders competition

Faculty of Business and Information Technology (FBIT) students in the Networking and Information Technology Security program have been competing this fall in a nationwide annual competition called Cisco NetRiders. In the first round, UOIT ranked number one for the first time ever. First-year Networking and Security student Kyle Sugrue placed first overall in Ontario and five others from UOIT placed in the top 16.

The second round put all of the top finishers in the province against each other to determine the sole student who will represent Ontario in a competition against all of North America (including some top-name colleges and universities in the United States).

UOIT student rankings in Round 2:

• Chris Weber (third);
• Kyle Sugrue (fourth)
• Alexander Keller (fifth); and
• Brandon Laughlin (13^th).

Weber will represent UOIT at the national competition and will compete against top students from other North American post-secondary institutions.

The top prize for Round 3 on November 30 is an all-expenses paid trip to Cisco Headquarters in San Jose, California in January. All top 10 finishers will receive a monetary prize.

FBIT also salutes Josh Lowe, senior lecturer; Adam Baran, lecturer and lab co-ordinator, for the time they dedicated to their students, as well as Dr. Shahram Heydari, assistant professor and teaching assistants Alireza Izaddoost, Chris Carver and Imran Khan who worked closely with students last year.
