Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT and Qatar University partnering in $1 million research project on advanced energy conservation

OSHAWA, ONTARIO – The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Qatar University in Doha, Qatar is pleased to announce a new research collaboration to investigate solutions in advanced energy conservation in industrial and societal facilities.

Dr. Hossam Gaber, Professor, Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science, cross-appointed with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, UOIT, is the lead principal investigator. Dr. Gaber, with partners from Qatar University, was successful in obtaining international funding in the amount of US$991,440 over three years from the Qatar National Research Foundation (QNRF). The project was selected from submissions from researchers and scholars worldwide.Dr. Hossam Gaber

“Dr. Gaber’s project demonstrates UOIT’s commitment to research of the highest quality at both the national and international level,” said Dr. Michael Owen, Vice-President, Research, Innovation and International, UOIT. “UOIT’s partnership with Qatar University is part of an important new collaborative effort between Canada and Qatar. It will enable UOIT to be a global leader in the area of building sustainable communities through energy conservation, including the design of high-performance advanced energy technologies and systems.”  

“Qatar University is pleased to announce this timely project, which supports the research culture at Qatar University and is aligned with the mandates expressed in Qatar National Vision and the National Development Strategy,” said a statement issued by Qatar University. “Through this research, we will develop innovative ideas and technologies to increase energy-saving in industrial facilities to meet the national mandate on energy consumption.”

“Through this research we are planning to develop innovative ideas and technologies to increase energy savings in industrial facilities which will meet the mandate to reduce energy consumption with lower carbon footprint, and meet worldwide initiatives to achieve sustainable communities,” said Dr. Gaber. “This project provides an outstanding opportunity for UOIT undergraduate and graduate students to acquire knowledge and build expertise in this promising area to promote energy sector development in Canada. It also opens the door for worldwide applications and jobs for the next generation of energy students and engineers.”
