Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT celebrates student leadership

UOIT hosts inaugural Leadership and Student Life Awards ceremony

Family, friends and award nominators clapped and cheered for 67 University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) students at the inaugural UOIT Leadership and Student Life Awards ceremony. The event honours and celebrates exceptional UOIT students who have made a positive impact on the community through their involvement with clubs, organizations and activities outside of the classroom.

“UOIT places great importance on leadership as part of the full student experience,” said President Tim McTiernan, PhD. “I’d like to thank the parents, families, friends, faculty and staff for their supportive role in developing students’ success.”

Students were called up to the stage to receive their aAward recipient Christine Dabrowski with UOIT President Tim McTiernanwards by President McTiernan and Olivia Petrie, Assistant Vice-President, Student Life.

“It was wonderful to see the students gathering with their fellow recipients, families, friends and staff to take pictures and celebrate their many accomplishments," said Sarah Rasile, Associate Director, Student Experience Centre. “I am glad we have started this new tradition that will celebrate the leadership and involvement of our amazing students in the campus community for many years to come.”

Later in the evening, graduate student Lokendra Ramotar and undergraduate Christine Dabrowski received the President’s Award of Excellence in Student Leadership. Both students addressed the crowd to share their experience of being a student leader at UOIT.

The award plaques will be updated annually and remain in the Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre’s Atrium display case.
