Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT Faculty of Science hosts highly successful CTAS workshop

University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) students were well-represented as the Faculty of Science played host to the 23rd Canadian Thermal Analysis Society (CTAS) Workshop and Exhibition May 7 and 8.

CTAS brings together a large group of universities, companies and government laboratories to exchange experiences and learn about new applications in the field of thermal analysis.

“It was a pleasure to have held CTAS 2013 at UOIT and it was even more of a pleasure to meet so many very talented students from the Materials Science program,” said Dr. Shanti Singh, CTAS President. “The dynamic UOIT student presence contributed greatly to the success of our workshop. I would like to fully recognize the contributions made by our CTAS Exhibits Councillor, Dr. Liliana Trevani of the UOIT Faculty of Science for her many months of work to prepare the workshop and her active participation at each and every presentation during the conference.”

UOIT students presented seven posters and made one oral presentation. In addition, Dr. Brad Easton, Associate Professor, Faculty of Science, UOIT, was one of two invited speakers, The other was Dr. Vladimiros Papangelakis of the University of Toronto.

Eight graduate students from the UOIT Materials Science program participated in the event: Naser Abdo, Jesse Allan, Jennie Eastcott, Patrick Edge, Mohammadreza Ghavidel, Donald McGillivray, Chris Odetola and Simone Quaranta. UOIT undergraduate Chemistry students Tanya Fernandes, Cassandra Scott and Nick-Hugh Wisdom also took part.
